These cunningly built devices were used from quite early times right through to the early 20th century as protection from enemy missile fire. They were basically earth filled wicker baskets, the wicker work woven strong enough to hold heaps of rocks and earth to deaden any enemy roundshot or small arms fire. These can be used for most armies, and certainly from the start of the gunpowder period right through to the advent of the machine gun.

When you assemble your well, leave the pulley unglued and simply trapped in the yoke hanging down from the cross beam. If you fill the little well with real water, you can lower the metal bucket into it using the string and fill the bucket. Really. How cool is that?
